All of these technical terms are called Shin Splints. Therefore, Shin Splints is the common name given
to pain over the front or back of the lower leg when people are hurting.The pain from Shin Splint is at time hard to identify because everyone’s body is different and the mechanics differ slightly. The most common factor occurs when the foot flattens out after the weight of the body is applied and the stretching created by overpronation, inflammation or tendinitis occurs. Pronation is normal when the foot flattens slightly with common foot motion. Overpronation occurs if the flattening becomes too strenuous and flattens out, causing the foot to roll inwards. This excess force causes excess demand on the muscle of the leg and lead to complaints of shin splints.
Shin Splints Treatment ---Shin Splints make you think of the bone splitting on your lower leg because of the searing pain you experience as you hit the wall half way through a marathon.
It’s not only the top runners in marathons that suffer Shin Splints. Anyone that hasn’t shaped up those muscles and goes out, maybe in the wrong shoes on bad pavement, can find themselves dropping out, with tears running down their cheeks.
That is your body telling you to quit, before the Shin Splints you have develop into serious a stress injury.
It is best to avoid Shin Splints by starting with stretching exercises to keep out of trouble. Take a class with a professional to learn how to stretch the hamstrings, calf muscles and Achilles Tendons. Also work those lower leg muscles to toughen them up. Drawing pictures of things with your big toe and doing reverse circles will get great results.
Controversy as to the cause of the
Shin
Splints pain has been the subject of much debate.
There
are differing thoughts as to the etiology or cause of Medial Tibia Stress Syndrome (MTSS)
or shin splints. Most would agree that the condition is exercise-induced
however little
research-supported information has identified the specific cause of Shin pain. The cause or etiology of the pain includes the
following:
| 1. | Periostitis inflammation of the outer layer of the bone where the muscles attach |
| 2. | Myositis inflammation of muscle |
| 3. | Tendinitis inflammation of the muscle-tendon complex that attaches to the bone |
| 4. | Stress Fracture documented description of a bone injury on x-ray or via bone scan |
| 5. | Compartment Syndrome swelling, pressure, and ischemia (lack of blood and oxygen) in the deep posterior compartment in the lower part of the leg* |

Shin Splints or leg pain occur in the front of the shin bone. The most common are on the outer part of the Shin but they can also occur on the inner part of the shin. The most common cause of this condition is overuse.
This outer part of the Shin is a very difficult area to stretch, so stretching will never
be the silver bullet for this condition. There are some runners who are prone to
Shin
Splints as this is their weak link in the chain. Regardless of your susceptibility to the
condition, again there are specific habits that can be done to both prevent and
heal Shin Splints.
