What are shin splints?
Shin splint is a common misnomer in sports medicine; Physical Therapists and Medical Doctors seldom use the term.  The professionals like to describe a symptom of pain over the front or back of the tibia bone by using a specific diagnosis.  Shin splints pain can be due to either problems of the muscles, the bone, or the attachment of the muscle to the bone.  The technical terms are medial tibial stress syndrome, stress factor or exercise induced compartment syndrome -- all short for shin splints.   Therefore, 'shin splints' is simply the common usage for pain over the front or back of the Tibia bone.

The term shin splints are not actually a diagnosis as mentioned earlier, but a series of problems causing a typical pain.  Therefore, let your doctor perform a careful physical examination and medical history to determine the exact cause of the shin splints.   The area of maxim pain will be different in different patients who have different underlying problems that causes the shin splints.

1. Periostitis � inflammation of the outer layer of the shin bone where the muscles attach.

Everyone’s body differs and the body’s mechanics are certainly slightly different.  The strength of the bones and tendons has an effect on shin splints.  The most common problem occurs when the foot flattens out as weight is applied and is implicated in causing shin splints -- this is  Pronation and Overpronation.  Pronation is normal when the foot flattens slightly, meaning foot motion.   Overprontion occurs when the foot becomes too flattened out causing the foot to roll inwards.
